What are dental veneers?
Veneers are thin, tooth-colored shells designed to cover the front surface of teeth. They are custom made from porcelain or resin composite materials.
Veneers are often used to fix:
- Discolored teeth
- Worn down, broken, or chipped teeth
- Misaligned, uneven or irregularly shaped teeth
- Gaps between teeth
Who can get veneers?
As a candidate for dental veneers, teeth need to be healthy and free from decay. You should be free of gum disease. It’s also important that you don’t habitually grind your teeth, and that your bite aligns correctly. The procedure requires that candidates have enough healthy tooth enamel to support the veneer as it is bonded to the tooth.
How does it work?
The process to get dental veneers will require multiple trips to the dentist’s office. During your first visit, you and Dr. Hooper will discuss what you want to achieve. You will receive a complete oral examination to determine if veneers are the appropriate treatment for you.
The next steps include preparation for the procedure. The dentist will remove about 1/2 millimeter of surface enamel from your tooth, which equals the thickness of the veneer. Your dentist will then take a mold of your teeth and the impression is sent to a laboratory for construction.
The final step in the process is to bond the veneer to the tooth. First, Dr. Hooper will temporarily place the veneer to determine size and color fit. The dentist may make adjustments to ensure the best fit and color match. When the fit is determined, the tooth will be cleaned, polished, and etched. Etching roughens up the tooth which improves the bonding process.
Once the tooth is in position, a light beam hardens the bonding agent. Any excess cement will be cleaned up, your bite will be evaluated and final adjustments will be made. A follow-up visit may be necessary for us to check up on the position of the veneers and see how your gums have responded to the procedure.
Advantages of Dental Veneers
Dental veneers offer numerous benefits beyond aesthetic improvements. They can provide a natural, uniform appearance to your smile, hiding imperfections such as stains or chips. Veneers are also durable and stain-resistant, meaning they maintain their appearance and functionality with proper care. They can be a less invasive alternative to more extensive procedures like crowns or braces, allowing for a significant smile enhancement with minimal disruption to your natural teeth.
Maintenance and Care for Veneers
Caring for dental veneers is much like caring for your natural teeth. Regular brushing and flossing are essential to keep your veneers and surrounding teeth healthy. Using a non-abrasive toothpaste is crucial to prevent scratching the surface of your veneers. Additionally, routine dental check-ups are crucial to ensure that the veneers are in good condition and that there are no underlying issues with your teeth or gums. Avoiding hard or sticky foods can also help prolong the life of your veneers.
Common Myths About Dental Veneers
There are several misconceptions about dental veneers that can lead to confusion. One common myth is that veneers are only for cosmetic purposes and offer no functional benefits. In reality, veneers can protect teeth from further damage and enhance their function. Another myth is that veneers are highly noticeable and unnatural-looking. However, modern veneers are crafted to match the natural appearance of your teeth, providing a seamless and attractive result.
Cost and Insurance Considerations
The cost of dental veneers can differ based on factors like the materials chosen and the complexity of your case. While veneers can be a significant investment, many patients find the long-term benefits and enhanced confidence to be well worth the expense. Insurance coverage for veneers may vary, as they are often considered a cosmetic procedure. It’s advisable to consult with your dental office and insurance provider to understand your coverage options and any potential financial assistance available.
Potential Risks and Complications
Although dental veneers are generally safe and effective, there are some potential risks and complications to be aware of. These can include sensitivity to hot or cold foods, potential for veneer damage if proper care is not taken, and the need for replacement if the veneers become chipped or stained over time. It’s important to discuss these potential risks with your dentist and follow their recommendations for care and maintenance to minimize any issues.
